Ok, here goes:

1. Durango Dog Park:

Durango Dog Park SleddingThis is the perfect spot for a family outing to go sledding. Located in the heart of Durango, it's easy to find and has plenty of room to sled. Plus, there's a semi- fenced-in area where your pup can get some exercise while you're sledding! The terrain is flat to walk to the hill straight across from the entrance, and depending on how high you take your sled, it can be quite the ride. It also still provides enough of a thrill for the kids. Be sure to arrive early in the morning, before the crowds come, for an even better experience. If you have your own sleds, all you need to do is park at the dog park and start sledding away.

Directions to the Durango Dog Park-  21850 Hwy. 160 W. Durango , CO 81301

From Downtown Durango, head west on Hwy160 towards Mancos. 0.1 Miles after from the light of Hwy160, and after you have crossed the Animas River, there is a small dirt parking lot on the left. You can park there and walk to the entrance. There is no overnight parking here, and no camping.

Pros:

  • Awesome spot to take the kids and the dog at the same time.
  • Easy access to a good sledding hill from parking lot to sledding time
  • Right in downtown, Durango.
  • Great for kids

Cons:

  • This is an off-leash dog park. So there will be other dogs that may come to hang out, or want to run with you down the hill.
  • *Possibility of sledding on poop, even though people are supposed to pick it up, its still a possibility!!
  • Parking lot is small, and often is full during mid-day.

    • Easy Parking- great for having your car close by with snacks, etc.
    • Huge hill for all ages

    • Can get super busy on a snowday with local kids

Ok, so that is our top three locations to go sledding in downtown Durango. There are so many more areas that you can go sledding in town too, such as up at Skyridge, or at Fort Lewis College. We are always looking for new and fun sledding hills, so let us know your favorite!

For buying a sled in town, here are two places that will have what you need:

    1. Ace Hardware: This hardware store has quite a lot of items in it, and sledding equipment is defiantly one of them. You can get saucers, regular sleds and even gloves if you need it. It is located right in the town plaza near South City Market.

    2. Big 5 Sporting Goods: This is a great spot to find a good sled for a nice deal. They also have snow tubes too and saucers, along with the typical sled.

We hope you have an awesome time out on the sled, and enjoy the fresh snow!
